Reducing diameter of a ball screw shaft.

IF the thread crests are "flat" and finished, suggest you find/make a brass
tube with an I.D. to match the screw-O.D; band-saw the length to separate
into two "hulls", and use those as a bush and chuck-up on that over the threaded
portion. Depending upon how long the "shaft ends" are, you might need to
use a live-center. Then you can turn the shaft down 1 mm (well 2 mm. dia.,
that is) using a carbide insert, without having to anneal it. I have done this
several times myself. Work carefully, and it's no big deal. Don't attempt
to cut to final depth on first pass until you "learn what you are doing"
cutting the hardened steel. Jan Rowlnd
