6 cycles and 24 detents. That way you will get one increment per
mechanical "click".

The Bournes encoders are just switches. If you are connecting them
to a device like an Ipac keyboard interface board ( see
http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html ), just wire them directly to the
Ipac terminals. If you are connecting them to a quadrature input,
like on a breakout board like the one from www.campbelldesigns.com
then wire 5 volts to the switch so that it brings the board input up
to 5 volts when the switch is closed.
