It is the original Fanuc model 0 servo motor that was on the Shizuoka
cnc mill, so I am sure it is meant to run both directions :-)

(I did notice the brushes are indeed at right angles to the armature
when I inspected each of the 4 of them)

Turning the armature.....dang, I would want to obtain a spare Fanuc 0
motor before I did *that*..... :-/
