OK. I uploaded a bunch of pictures of the spindle to flickr.

Or try searching for Issoku precision spindle. I have filed under
those keywords. All there pictures are public.
I have attached, as text, some descriptions and questions to each
picture. I realized after disassembly, and careful measurement, that
the main shaft is actually 17mm in diameter. I also realized that
the inner 6mm shaft is threaded on the "business" end...and most of
the threaded part of the shaft has broken off. Perhaps this is
the "drawbar" and some small variety of collet was meant to screw on
to this threaded shaft? I note it is spring loaded. (Obvious now in
the pictures...after disassembly.)
Any hints or observations you can glean from these pictures are
welcome. (I was pretty pleased with how well they came out - as
close-up pictures.)
