I hope you have deep pockets. I scratch built a laser engraver/cutter
using a 50 watt CO2 medical laser I obtained for free (lucky me!) and
the best I can do is 1/4" ply *really* slow. 1/8" ply is more
reasonable with only 50 watts...leaves a cherry brown edge and small
kerf.

3/4" ply....that is going to take 200+ watts. Unfortunately, 200+
watt lasers are not something you can scratch build or easily find
surplus (or on ebay). Usually you have to actually shell out big
bucks for those...say $20,000.00 or so. At the point you realize it
is going to cost $20,000, you order a dozen endmills from MSC. :-)

But if you have the money...check out www.synrad.com or Coherent's
Diamond series of CO2 lasers.

Sometimes you can find a used laser of that power at laserresale.com
