Since this is a capacitive sensor, putting a phosphor bronze leaf spring on
the slider, so it wipes against the scale beam, or even rigging a wire to
ground the two metal components together, might be a good thing to try.
If you have some of those alligator clip leads, you might try putting
one clip on
the scale, and one on the sliding head, and see if the problem goes away.
A voltage difference, especially one with fast-rising edges, will drive
these scales
crazy. When used in the hand (digital calipers) the system is pretty
robust,
as people's bodies are pretty much equipotential from left to right hand.
This may not be so with a machine tool, where the slides float on a film of
oil, and may be totally isolated from each other when moving.
