cnc/copy mill teach

The parts I am most wanting to make are copies of gun parts...What I would like is a 2 axis stage on ball bearings - no lead screws- with rotary encoders to follow/read table travel..Then having stylus in the conventional vert mill orientation. I would like to have gunpart - a hammer, trigger , lever whatever, mounted on table , then push table so stylus follows part contour and then have the encoders send those changing coordinates to computer in teach mode.....The intention is similar to digitizing but considerably faster for getting X/Y - possibly Z coordinates into the 'puter...
Anybody want to comment on what might be done to put this copy stage together? Surely somebody has already done this , anybody?
