My 2c worth here is to forgo the electronics and use a PC running something
like turbocnc or emc. I say this as one who has a knowledge of electronics
and builds his own drivers and other gizmos.
I also think you should then add a stepper to the x axis. It's one of those
"Having done this, for a small amount of extra effort you get all this"
things.
With one stepper and a sensor you get an infinitely variable lead screw. Add
an additional stepper and it will turn the threads to an exact ISO profile
using a single point tool add a shoulder and do many other tasks.
Even if you just stick with the stepper on the lead screw and a spindle
sensor, Turbo CNC on an old dos laptop is much more versatile than a
dedicated bit of electronics.
All IMHO of course :-)

I found a company that used to make such a thing here in the uk some while
back, when i contacted them they said that they has some bits left but not a
complete kit and were not interested in selling any of it, shame really.
