I don't disagree with any of your points. I've heard the "I just want to do
this something simple" argument a few times. It has merit. So long as that
one simple thing is all you will ever want to do.. My own experience is
that, having made something move for the first time, I was instantly hooked
and, inevitably, went on to bigger and better things.

I Agree with that,
I have a Deskcnc controller that can do threads waiting to be used
on a laser cutter sometime in the future.
but Idon't want to have another PC running machine.(already have a
gantry with deskcnc)
Besides ,If I can do it with microprocessors I can use it in any
future machines with simple functions that don't need a PC hanging
around just to make a simple move like go to that point and stop.
I've just got a south bend lathe clone missing all the gears to cut
threads. got the idea? I could just buy the gears or machine new ones
but that would be soooo simple :-) .
