Bill, This can be done with a rotary encoder using Mach3 software. The calipers would work for feedback also as long as they are at least 2.5 vdc and have 2 channels. I sell a board to do this very thing with Mach3. Sounds like you might need to fix the backlash first though if you want to use a linear scale like a caliper would be.
