Holes in granite

Making holes in granite is very easy to do.
You have to use diamond bits and keep them wet.
Harbor Freight has all kinds and sizes of diamond
bits for very cheap.($5.00 -$30.00).I thought they'd
be one time use junk(I got a set of 50 for $13.99),
but Iv'e drilled 20 1/2" holes in 1/2" thick porcelain tile
and haven't ruined a single one. That tile was the second
hardest material I,ve ever put a hole in(carbide was first).
You can get a highly polished and very flat piece
practically free from a place that makes gravestones.
They always have a piece where the grain wasn't just
right or some little thing.
I even had one place square up a chipped piece for me once.
I used to have a leather company..that's how I know.
One could get the granite, put it on the mill, make
a little dam out of clay around where you want the hole,
put an 1/8" of water in it,use a light touch...let the
tips of the diamond particles just grind away.
It goes pretty quick and is very smooth and clean.
By the way when I made the holes in the porcelain,I thought
that I might just sacrifice a carbide bit to get it done.
The carbide turned Orange Hot and never made a dent...the
diamond did the hole in less than 5 minutes.
Hope that's of any use
