It is easy on some macines. My big machine moves at some few inches a
minute. ( I really need to do something about rapids on that) so when
any switch hits, the motor stops and things just kinda stay about
where they are.

A plasma cutter can race at hundreds of inches a minute. a stop that
does not include a brake and a safe distance will risk machine damage.

But, you are correct that switches should fail in such a way as to not
destroy things. maybe a knife to actually shear the wire might be a
final failsafe for that odd chance of a failed switch ?
