For completeness I did some tests today with the proximity sensors as home
switches.
There's a fairly large video here http://www.caswa.com/dropbox
That shows the prox probes installed and operating. In every configuration
the system homed to within 5 microns and I only had two of those errors. I'd
say 90% of the time it homed to within 2 micron.
The proxes I'm using have a 2mm sensing range. Probably not enough room to
decelerate from an 8m/min rapid.

Thanks to Paul, Steve, Dave, Alan, and Irby for thoughtful responses,
and especially to Irby for providing an actual measured performance
number as well as giving me a heads-up on the behavior of EMC with
respect to the "home" button.
You've helped me gain an appreciation for the different functions
these seemingly trivial switches could serve. To push Dave's closing
metaphor, I'm still trying to figure out what tools should be "in the
box."
I'd still be interested in performance numbers for mechanical switches
akin to Irby's number for his slotted optical switch if anybody's got
them. Alan said he's heard all kinds of good things about the
repeatability of mechanical switches, but supporting data are elusive.

Kent
