ELS has a driver you might be interested in:

It uses the driver chip I mentioned.

I'd go for a "photo-interrupter" switch, not a simple photocell. Much the
same as one might use for a limit switch. The product (is it thin enough to
go through a photo-interrupter switch?) then actuates a switch on either end
of it's "travel" limits. The stepper controller would then generate an
appropriate number of steps to re-align the product.

Alternately, roller-micro switches could be used to sense the approach of
the product's edge.
