Harko! Thanks this is exactly what I'm looking for. Now that I've got spec's I
can design this monster and see how much resin I'll need.

I'll be turning a 2 meter mirror with two radiuses of curvature on it plus the
secondary and if that's successful I'll be able to make any mirror I want.
Actually I'll be testing a whole bunch of glass before I mount up $80000 in
glass.

I need to reach at least 5m(micrometer) precision; making it out of resin will
allow better temperature control with child water piping. The final polish to
1m (/2) or better will be done using traditional diamond lap methods.

The only thing I need to find is a cogless linear drive that has a repeatability
of 0.1m or 0.05m.

Heck, I could even make a profit! J/K. But even if I end up with lathe that
won't turn glass to the required finish, imagine the surface finish on metals!

Wish me luck! And thanks for the help!

This is the best one that I know of. You can do things like get close then use
linear ways and put a release agent on the bottom of them to make the accurate
base. I worked on a George Fisher lathe and they even made the spindle housing
out of Epoxy Cement. There are many benefits to making the machine that way.
Vibration will be dampened and the finish on the parts will be great. Most
hardinge lathes have a granite base. Any other questions
