There is a company called Etel which makes cogless linear motors but you
will have to provide scale feeback with 1 volt peak to peak sinewave which
Heidenhain makes I would go for the Metal scales and a Hardened CNC
controller to insure reliable operation. Like the MachineMate CNC which you
can use variables and formula's to control the servo's.

You can find Etel on the web search for Etel linear motors
