As Jon already noted it's more about which piece of hardware/software
closes which part of the loop, if I understand correctly, the torque,
speed, and position loops all need to be closed, different schemes just
close the loops using different hardware/software.

for best performance I'm guessing you should use the method that results
in the widest bandwidth for the positioning loop.
