As another option, you could check out the Pixie P100 step/dir to
analog output PID controller. www.skyko.com Very easy to tune
using the free windows software and an RS232 serial port.

It works with any brush or brushless amplifier that accepts a ref+/-
analog control input (for example, an AMC BE15A8 or a Copley 503).
Sometimes you can find these on ebay really cheap...for example I
bought a brand new in box advanced motion control B25A20AC brushless
amp that runs off 120VAC for $26!

One thing I like about using the industrial style amplifiers is the
built in protections against over current, over voltage, short
circuit, etc.
