Hi Elliot and All:
Have you considered a percision tape measure with a simple
vernier to split the 1/16 inch division into eight parts (1/128 inch)
or about .008 inch. I recently purchased an inexpensive 24 inch
vernier calipers made from aluminum extrustion with this type of
scale at a Big Lots store. (nine dollars made in China at local
discount store) Does anybody know about these electronic tape
measures and how they work. I think they get down to 1/2 mm which is
about .020 inch. I looked at them when they first came out to put on
my old Bridgeport mill to save counting the turns of the handle.

A question about how to built a device: I need one axis with at least 8 feet
of travel. The load is very light, just a target. It does not need to be
motorized, but some sort of position readout is required. Portable and
inexpensive are design goals. The accuracy of position readout isn't very
high, 0.005 to 0.010" would be OK.
This is almost like one axis of a router. What is good practice there?
Thanks for any ideas you feel willing to share.
regards-
Elliot
