I have over 15 years in computer controlled machinery in industrial environments.
the best advice I can give is put a switch on the door to the room.
place a very large button for a emergency stop (any industrial supply shop has buttons for this use.
the device you were refering to is called a light curton (sp) it has 2 bars placed on both sides of the opening. when something penetrates the opening it sends a signal (normally open or closed switch) to a controller that shuts down the machine.
the simplest for a individual machine is simply to put a pannel (eather removable or on a hinge) that has a switch that deactivates if the pannel is removed.
you might think of placing a few strings with a switch attached to it. if the kid tries to mess with the machine he/she will touch the string and shut the machine down.

I couldn't find the ifno but it was mentioned I
believe on this list on infrared sensors to help
control switches for access to the machine in
proximity. Can someone familiar with these get with
me on locations to purchase and a bit more specific on
how to implement? I need this for when I walk away
from the machine as I do not want my kids walking in
(even though I've already been cautioning them and
teaching them what it can do - both good and bad) and
reaching for something on a pause in the action only
to find themselves get wrapped up in it. Shop is
dimly lit and I thought they said infrared would work
in low light conditions? Anyone?
