This is another reason I'm tempted by the homemade collet, if it was
machine to be a reasonable fit on the specific stock size to start
with then it would just need nipping up some how that last little bit.

What I don't want though is to have to machine tapers everytime, I
like the idea of the collet being essentially a tube with some slits
in it which is squeezed by some other taper or wedge type mechanism.
