about that same price TI makes a nice DSP F2812 with 16 PWM, a couple of
quadrature encoder counters, A/D, more counter timers, 32 bit instruction
set with the DSP capabilities and I think runs 150Mhz with the PLL on.

Also, ultimately if this were to be a hobby project the cost of the
development and programming tools are a major consideration.

I used the PIC 18F series for the Electronic Leadscrew. The 8 bit
architecture doesn't allow me to use 32 bit integers for position and speed
control for two stepper motors. It can do one at a time but not two. I had
someone try out some of the firmware on a Freescale 9S12 and it too doesn't
have the 32 bit horsepower. It would be interesting to see how the 8x 32
bit processor did the interrupt stepping routines since that's 75 percent of
the execution time of the ELS software.
