single rotary axis for X and Y ?

Hi all,
I was looking at an industrial robot arm. the kind that has one column
and has to rotate and extend to move.
I was wondering if there is some simple way to program the unit for X
and Y coordinates so it can move to any Cartesian coordinate ?
