Well best laid plans.
The idea was to move the leadnut for the longer screw and create a new
one from Delrin using just the tip of the longer screw as the tap.
The problem is that being quite efficient folks, Proxxon did not
extend the thread on the longer screw as far towards the handle as
they did on the shorter screw. So this means that I must put my newly
created nut back where it began, I loose the length of the tap portion
of the screw in travel which is not so bad really I guess but I wonder
if I might have tried the expanding nut idea first. That said I know
I can at least make leadnuts galor and could if I wanted just order
another screw from Proxxon as a spare part giving me back my 6" travel.
I've put pictures on a webpage in fact I thought I posted it earlier,
oh well. Please take it all with a pinch of salt as I am back peddling
a little now.
I can say though that my homemade tap works like a real dream, I found
it made nuts that were a little two tight on the other screw so cut a
single tooth on that one to clean it up, a few passes and it feels
great on that screw too.
