A "rack mount" is much more than an enclosure method.
If you have access to surplus rack mount equipment (as I do), you
will find that the enclosures, mountings, power supplies, drive
electronics, ventilation system, etc. are all much better
built...which translates into $$$$$ if you had to do it from scratch.
It is well worth the effort (which is why I am asking questions) to
reuse and salvage any components you can.
As for shop floor space, I note that a laptop with mouse can easily
take up the same floor space as a rack that holds the rack mounted
equipment.
If you have dealt with electronic test equipment, you will know that
rack mounting is always an option offered....for $$$.
