Thank you all for the input. In all it's changed my thinking that any
such software be designed from the point of view of doing the best it
can under the conditions, not as an enabler of cheap machines. Also
the software should know about millhead dynamics.

Barring dead-zone discontinuities, I can still see value in higher
order control systems to manage screw torsion for a smoother control
system.
