That's my site. I had some fun discussing the idea on CNCzone. At
the time the real sticking point was encoder resolution, we decided
that you would probably want something around 50000 pulse per rev even
for fairly inaccurate scans. That cost money.

Having said that if you look at the relevant forum on the CNC zone
there is a thread about a 16bit absolute encoder now available that if
bought in quanity is VERY VERY cheap. You then just need very good
bearings and some carbon fibre tubing. If I were to do it I'd look at
writing a plug-in for rhino to take the points, there is a wizard in
the SDK for that sort of thing though you need to do the matrix stuff etc.

Nothing's easy :(
