Hi Dave,
Sorry to here you let the smoke out.
First you should have one main fuse, protecting the wiring and transformer
in case the main rectifier blows for example. The inrush current of a hefty
powersupply like this can be quite huge so I'd use a slow blow fuse here.
Then put one fuse inline with each drive. Do _not_ forget the 470uF cap
right at the drive, it's important when using a fuse inline. Then, also
important, put a diode in reverse across the fuse, I'd go for one capable of
3-5A . The diode will let current flow from the drive back to the power
supply if the fuse should blow while the motors are spinning.
Use fast fuses with as low value you can get away with without blowing them
under normal operating conditions. You can probably uses a fuse with a lower
current rating than what the drive is set to.
