It doesn't work very well because it is so porous. Some people use it and
coat it with polyurethane including the edges. However, when the cutter cuts
into the top of the board, then you start to loose vacuum if you are using a
vacuum hold down system. Another negative is that particle board isn't as
stable as MDF. I have a few customers that are using laminated particle board.
It has melamine or some other laminate on both surfaces, you would need to
seal the edges and you still have some loss of vacuum once you cut thru the
laminate but it does work fairly well for the spoil board. The best spoil
boards are made from high quality plywood, usually at least 5/8" thick and with
11 or more layers in it. That would be the most costly spoil board material.
