If cost is a big deal, and you are aware you are going 2nd class, low
density ( sub: Ultra High Molecular Weight, slightly better, still cheap )
polyethylene plate sheeting will do most jobs. we usually use 1/2 to 1 inch
thick. One advantage is that you can self-tap your medium loaded clamps
into this stuff.

You gotta store the stuff flat when not using (g) ... and just accept the
warp everytime you use it ... clamp it down and run a big flycutter over the
mounting surface, probably everytime you use it if z axis accuracy is a deal
... if you are routing thru your workpiece, you might be able to live with
the z direction warp.

Keep in mind this is essentially junk compared to 0 tempered aluminum plate
etc., but cheapness has its place (g) .... oh, it's light to handle, also
...

If you are routing a workpiece where your cnc rig drills a bunch of clamp
down holes thru the workpiece, the self tap feature is great.... but there
is a limited # of times you can self tap in this gooey material. For runs
of 500 or 4000 pieces, we make little hollow flat head studs that screw into
the polyE ... kinda like helicoils the threads might be 3/8 x 10 ( course )
and the flat heads maybe 1/16 inch thick, and a central threaded hole of
maybe #6-32 or some such.

For quick and dirty, we have been known to use a 2 x 4 etc. (g).

hope this helps, ken campbell, deltawerkes
