That is the approach we are taking with the ARCNC100 CNC appliance.

It is based on a mini-itx format board running real-time Linux and
EMC2 together with our half-height FPGA PCI card and I/O daughter
cards. The entire package fits in 7"x7"x3.5" and can be powered from
an unregulated 6-26 VDC power supply and uses Compaq flash for file
storage no there is no hard disk.

We also have a free softare that runs on MS-Windows or Mac OSX to
control the ARCNC100 applicance and download files to it. So one
doesn't have to know Linux or EMC2 to use the appliance.
