I first ran into this with Super Vexta drives, they had the two
inputs marked CW and CCW, and a mysterious switch labeled
"1P/2P". When I flipped the switch to 2P, it worked as
step/direction. I have since seen this in a lot of Japanese
motion control gear. So, no, the SGDA-xxxP drives take
opto-coupled step and direction inputs, when set for that mode.
You set all the parameters by connecting a PC serial port to the
drive and running a downloadable program from Yaskawa.

They may have a number of other operating modes, and grey code
sounds reasonable for electronic gearing applications, or any
slaving to an encoder.

It is all in the manuals. Finding the right stuff in a Yaskawa
manual, or even finding the downloadable manuals, is tough, but
it is all on their site, under something like "obsolete products".
