Quite they often look at the ignition time (time between pulse being
applied and current flow) and if it is zero then there may be a short/arc.

Or you just look at the average current for a measure of the gap.
I've also seen where it is considered an advantage to work on
individual sparks, turning them off at the point when they turn bad to
help avoid carbon build ups.

There are lots of ways to skin the cat, they don't need to be
complicated to beat an RC generator by a large margine from what I can
tell.
