My training wasn't in mech engineering, though I grew up around family home
diy shops with lathes, shapers mills, the usual stuff.
My degree's are all electronics where they teach you a little in machine
shop techniques. When I first started my company I needed a complex punch
and die, I milled and hand polished both to a nice tight sliding fit, took
months. Then someone told me about EDM could have made the punch and die in
a day. The college taught the best you can get is about a thou machining,
and then everything had to be ground. It's amazing how blind the lecturers
were, and how blind fresh graduates are. Nowadays I service EDM kit, but
there's still so much to learn, and the more you know, the more you realise
you don't know. It's nice being part of these groups since there are people
of all sorts of skills and together we all learn from each other.

Right, that's not surprising to me. Personally, I'm scared stiff to try
using anything smaller than a #4-40...
