Spindle motors

High speed spindles tend to be heavy and hard to program.
The RC fraternity has some new "inrunner" (faster) and "outrunner"
(more torque) RC motors which seem to help reduce this mass (which
reduces the gantry loads which...)
The controllers are like the one at
http://www.align.com.tw/html/en/assembly/rce-bl75ge.htm which is a 54
Gram controller which handles 1.8 KW (over 2 HP!) up to 190,000
RPM. Of course there are bigger ones up to 125 Amps continuous...

Now the motors are not quite as good, but this one appears to be good
to 12,000 RPM and almost 2 HP continuous but weights less than a
pound, 2" in diameter, 2 1/2" long. These DO require external
cooling, on a model aircraft prop wash cools them.
Or this one
http://www.rctoys.com/rc-toys-and-parts/NM-1509-25F/RC-PARTS-BRUSHLESS-MOTORS-NEUMOTORS.html
which is over 1 HP and rated for 60,000 RPM continuous.
Make the spindle light and the gantry gets lighter and the slew is
faster and...
