It's the combination of a 2D print and a constant depth for each
feature. Think of it like a plotter where you can go to any position
and the ink is either on (where the cutter is in the part at some
depth) or off. The main difference is 3D surfacing, where the part
has complex curves in the XZ and YZ planes.
