2.5D is basically what you would normally be able to do with a manual
mill. Drilling, cutting outlines, slots etc. The only real difference
with CNC is that it is faster and you can easily cut arcs and circles.
It is fast and accurate but it can't do 3 dimensional cyrves. 3D can cut
comples 3 dimensional curves but it tends to cut a lot slower and with
low-end CAM packages you can lose accuracy. You need to think about the
type of machining you intend to do. For general purpose 'engineering'
type work you are probably best off with 2.5D. If you want to do mould
making or 3 dimensional artwork then 3D is the way to go.
