Jon,
Carving bricks is easy, even carbide will usually suffice. I once punched a
5" hole through 1 foot thick brick wall. It took longer to go to the rental
place than drill the hole. Even a hardware store masonry drill under water
should suffice for engraving. Take a walk through an old cemetery, those
stones were carved with a hammer and carbon steel chisels.
Firing bricks is not a trivial task.
