I agree carbide or diamond should do the job. Harbor Freight sells
carbide-tipped flat-V drills for going into glass IIRC. A cheap
experiment, might work, might not.

I don't see a basis for a disposable design. I'm pretty sure this will
need to be flood-cooled to keep the bit temp down, remove the material
from the cut, and very importantly prevent the release of potentially
hazardous dust. Basically that'll turn the dust into mud which won't
even aerosolize again once it dries out, which protects you and your
equipment. Vulnerable parts are the leadscrew, slides, intake vents to
the cutting head motor, and motor/leadscrew bearings. You will want to
do your best to contain the water spray, but these parts should be oiled
and oil repels water. This water will damage MDF and may swell/warp
other woods. And making this "custom" machine may not be as cheap as
anticipated.

If it fits within the Z-clearance, like ~$1500 could make a Taig CNC
setup, and if the parts are adequately protected against rock dust,
after 200 bricks it could sell for not all that much less than you paid
for it. The CNC parts in the custom frame are not always cheap and the
salvage value of random parts after it "dies" may not be so good.
