Problem with grey scale is that it doesn't represent true depth of
field. You will have to massage the grey levels to be the correct
depth even then you really can only get two or three times the depth
of relief such as you would get on a coin. If you don't adjust the
grey areas independently (The retouched photo looks horrible) the
result will be a relief image that looks real good with one lighting
angle but hopeless on another angle, the shadows just do not show as
they would with a true representation of depth. A 3D conversion is
the easiest way to go.
