Hi, I know that you can use the "heightfield from bitmap" command in Rhino. A lot of 3d modelling packages have this feature too.

I was looking at doing this very same thing. Searching the web I came
across a program that used grey scale to determine various areas in a
scanned photo. Those areas could be pulled from the file and sent to a
graphics program to cleanup. The resulting file could then be sent to a 2D
DXF to CNC path generator to get the actual tool path. I was working with a
non-Microsoft program but have had several crashed and do not have the
program any longer.

Has anyone done a conversion to get a photograph of a human face (not a
3D laser scan) into a suitable transfer software program to run on a
CNC machine?
If so, what format did you use and what was the reproductive quality of
