I think you misunderstood my proposal.
Use the belt as the drive mechanisn, not an axis coupling device.
So you have a belt on either side of the gantry, running along the rail.
Maybe the belt is 6m per side, looped and joined at the carrige.
Then at one end of the machine, you have a shaft, as wide as the rails, with
a pulley at each end. The motor is directly coupled to the shaft.
And the belts are perfectly suited to this application.
