I always set solid physical stops on my turret lathe(manual) to prevent the
tool reaching the chuck, and I would do the same if it was cnc. The error is
just not worth it.
I often have to bring the tool to approx 1mm from the chuck, but I know I'm
safe. On a cnc you could have the switch tied to a stalk, which is a travel
limit, so you get the best of both. And if there are multiple tools, have a
different stop selected per tool.
