I'll send you some pictures of the setup on cnc machine I bought it has a pretty good setup. I'll take the pictures tomorrow if you want them.

As you already realize, limits on Z aren't that useful. One fairly
common solution at the chuck end is to have the limit mounted on an
adjustable clamp. You can then quickly move it to suit your current
setup. On the other end the best solution is probably a switch that
trips if you hit the tailstock.
