Were you cutting foam? Foam particles being sucked through a plastic
hose is one
of the best static generators known. Vacuum transfer of stuff has
caused some truly
terrible industrial explosions, too, so it is a well-known phenomenon.
Other than making the
entire hose conductive, single point grounding may help, but in some
cases can actually
make the hazard worse. Wrapping a small wire many times around the
outside of the hose, so it
makes one turn every couple inches may manage to discharge things enough
to reduce the
problem.
