Yes, alignment problems with the read head very OFTEN show up ONLY when
moving in
one direction. The wire or strip that moves the head can tilt it as it
applies the force to move the head,
and that can cause it to either lift from the scale, tilt a bit or whatever.

Cable problems can also act like that at first. You can try wiggling
the cable
all along its length. If the display jumps when you wiggle the cable,
it is most likely a bad
cable.
