Stainless steel rod is usually very accurate. A hard to machine though.
Extruded Aluminium is pretty accurate too.

If your tailstock is out, you can clamp a rod in it, then mount a drill in
the chuck and drill a hole into it. Then you grind a flat on the back of
the drill bit and tap it backwards into the rod. You now have a well
centered drill, until you remove it.
