Graduating from CNC to robotics

Hi all,
I have previously CNCed a Sherline 3 axis mill using Gecko drives many years ago. However, I want to start dabbling with robotics and hope my message is not off topic here.
I intend to buy the Lego Mindstorms NXT2.0 intending to pass it to my grandchildren when they are ready for it. Anyone has any better ideas?
