yes thats exactly the type of work done on the swiss type screw machines

at the bottom are a couple links to descriptions of the swiss type lathes
basicly the headstock moves on ways in the Z axis and "pushes" the stock
thru a guide bushing and into the tools,the tools move in the X axis only
the guide bushing supports the stock much like a follower rest would on an
engine lathe

are some pics of a mid size cam swiss machine (10MM)

if you ask around at the turning shops in your area you may find one
they would be willing to part with tucked into a corner
a lot of shops are moving to CNC swiss machines for faster setups
and shorter runs
