Peter,
I know exactly the machine you're looking for. A TBI chucker. Made in LA. Sort of like a Hardinge CNC, only a little beefier I think.
Lots of them around LA. Since they are older machines, they aren't
in big demand because of the old controls. Last one I saw had a
Fanuc 6T on it. Big bucks for new boards!!! I could have gotten
that in running condition for $1500. Although, considering the big
old stand-alone controller, who knows if it'd still be running after
moving? That machine is now being retro-fitted with an Ahha control
because the new owner didn't want to even fool with the Fanuc.
TBI's differ slightly from your "specs". They use a 315 (?) collet,
still bigger than a 5C. And they have a flat bed.
One of the brothers in the original company still supports the
machines.

Doug,
Thanks for the info. I have never heard of a TBI. You know what the initials stand for? The 315 collet, do you know what make and or what max dia is? I'll look through my collet catalog tonite.
Wasn't planning to "vacation" in LA but I may have to change me plans.....

PS, I priced a Powerhold 3J cartridge spindle and they wanted $12 or $14K for it with a drive pulley and a pneumatic collet closer. I believe cardboard box to ship in / live in comes with it!!!
